What VHS-C is and why it existed
JVC launched VHS-C (C for Compact) in 1982. Camcorders needed a light cassette, yet people wanted to watch the result on the VCR they already owned. The answer: smaller spools carrying the identical 12.65 mm (half-inch) tape found in big VHS. Clicked into an adapter, it becomes a VHS-sized cassette that any home deck could play. In Lithuania these cameras spread in the 1990s, often brought back from Germany or Scandinavia, so the tapes hold birthdays, school events and the first family drives to Palanga or Nida.
How to recognise a VHS-C cassette
It measures about 92 × 59 mm, a bit larger than a matchbox. Only one spool shows through the window. The label usually says “VHS-C” or “Compact VHS”, and the better ones “S-VHS-C”. Video8 and Hi8 are similar in size but show two equal spools and an “8” mark; MiniDV is smaller still.
The process, step by step
You count the tapes and write to us
Say how many VHS-C cassettes you have and whether other formats are mixed in. Add a photo if unsure. We reply with the price, the Tallinn locker address and packing tips.
You post them from a locker
No need to include the adapter; we have tested ones. Use a small sturdy box and send it with Omniva, LP Express or DPD. Transit from Lithuania takes 2–3 working days.
We inspect each cassette
The small shell is more fragile, and camcorders sometimes creased the tape while filming. We check edges, rollers and mould, and ask before any repair.
We play it through an adapter on a serviced deck
VHS or S-VHS deck with a time base corrector. S-VHS-C always goes on an S-VHS deck so the extra detail is kept.
We capture and check
The whole tape is recorded, sound and picture are reviewed and an MP4 is produced for phone, computer and TV.
You receive the files
Usually after 10–14 working days, as a cloud download (€7.90) or a USB stick (€12 and up). The cassettes go back to the locker of your choice.
Why an old adapter at home is a gamble
VHS-C adapters contain a small gear train, and motorised ones a battery. After 25–30 years the grease hardens and the gears wear, so the adapter can crease or snap the tape. We use proven adapters and loosen a stiff cassette by hand first. Cheap USB capture sticks are the other trap: with no time base correction, old footage stutters and the sound drifts off the picture.
What quality to expect
Standard VHS-C gives the same roughly 240 lines as full-size VHS: fine on a phone or tablet, and on a big TV just as you remember it. S-VHS-C is sharper at about 400 lines. Many VHS-C tapes were recorded in long play to fit more minutes; those are noisier and benefit most from a precisely aligned deck.
What it costs
VHS-C and S-VHS-C cost €9 per cassette, whatever the length. Full-size VHS tapes in the same parcel are €15. Over 20 cassettes, the whole order is 10% off and a 64 GB USB stick is included. Repair is €9. You pay the carrier for postage, from €7.49 with Omniva or €8.99 with LP Express; a handful of VHS-C tapes fits in the smallest locker box.

VHS-C questions
Should I send the adapter as well?
No, we have our own tested adapters. The cassettes alone are enough.
Are VHS-C and Video8 the same thing?
No. They are similar in size, but Video8 uses narrower 8 mm tape and shows two spools. Each needs its own machine.
A tape is stuck inside an old camcorder. What now?
Do not pull it out by force, which is the easiest way to snap the tape. Write to us and we will advise.
How is payment made?
We invoice at the end; the invoice can name you or your company.
